But now Natalie Imbruglia is ready to play the game of fame after re-emerging in the spotlight when she was exposed as a panda – the winner of The Masked Singer over the weekend.
Next on the agenda is a new album and a UK tour, after years of songwriter block.
So is it all about the cute and lovely panda costume?
Natalie, 47, said: “Time is everything. I was feeling really good and I am a mother. I think when you are a mother the idea of dressing up is more appealing.
“I’ve changed, so maybe that was a big motivating factor. At the time you were worried about what people would think, and I don’t care anymore. I think that’s age and wisdom, right?”
“You get tired of worrying about it in the public eye. But it’s good to be in a place where you can do a show like this and enjoy it and take yourself so seriously. Don’t take
At the age of 17, Aussie Natalie made a big splash when she joined the Neighbors’ cast, then left two years later to pursue a music career.

Despite working with Cold Play’s Chris Martin on their fourth studio album, 2009’s Come to Life, it bombed Australia and its UK and US releases were canceled.
It was at this time that Natalie disappeared from public view.
Natalie said: “I feel like I wasn’t going through the best time of my career and I feel like I wasn’t good at anything.
“It’s my belief – no matter what field you work in, I don’t think success means you will never be insecure.
“So I just went through a period where I realized, ‘I can’t do this. I’m not good at it.’ And it went on for a long time.”
In 2015, Natalie released Male, an album of cover songs by male artists. But three years later, he was able to record his music again.
He said: “I had not yet gone to Nashville and traveled to write that I had overcome it. [insecurity] Because I just thought, ‘Throw me deep, give me 10 days and two sessions a day’.
“And I wrote this song called When You Love So Much, and I thought, ‘I’m really proud of it. It’s a really good song.’
“And again, these would mean that you have to spend for these processes.
“It’s good to have that feeling and be really creative.”
The song is in the heart of Natalie’s album Firebird, which was released in September last year but has been redesigned following its success on The Masked Singer.
As well as reviving her interest in writing music, Natalie has fulfilled her dream of becoming a mother.
She divorced Australian rocker Daniel Johns in 2008, but in October 2019 she surprised fans by revealing that she was expecting her first child through a sperm donor.

He said: “He has a little panda. When he goes to bed at night, my suggestion is to dress like a panda. I asked, ‘Would it be okay if I could become a panda?’
“He just loves it, now there’s only one problem, every time he sees a panda he goes, ‘Mummy, mummy!’
“I suddenly realized I had to be really careful because we were at the airport and someone had a little girl with a whale bag with a panda on it and he was going, ‘Mummy, mummy!’ That way – she loves it.
“I was like, ‘Shh!'”
Natalie’s outfit was full of clues to her identity, but the show’s judges – Moe Gallagher, Devina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross – suspected the panda was Amanda Holden, Billy Piper or Lisa Stanfield.
Natalie said: “100% I saw it as an acting job.” Ever since I got to the studio in the car, I’ve been in the American accent. I really liked it.
“With the whole dress element, I noticed that things don’t read well. So, for example, when the panda put his arms down, he looked bored.
“So I was like, ‘Oh my God, I have to keep moving my arms.’ So you’re trying to sing and make fun of the panda.
“It was like being a kind of puppet. I really enjoyed the challenge.”
When Natalie was declared the winner, not everyone was happy and went on social media to justify her victory.

“But my experience of being on the show was just such an amazing friendship.
“It’s a fun family show. I don’t think it should be taken seriously.
“And I hope the most important thing is that people really enjoyed the fun we all had on the show. Everyone is a winner.”
Fans were also surprised to see Devina’s over-the-top reaction to her friend appearing as a panda in the final of the ITV show.
Natalie said the two had been friends for a long time.
He said: “Devina was DMing me after that, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe it.’

“So that was pretty funny.”
Natalie’s victory comes just days after news broke that her neighbor, the soap that made her famous in her teens, was about to be canceled.
Her character, Beth Brennan, is one of the most legendary characters on the Channel 5 show.
Natalie groaned: “I’m really sad! I think we all love our neighbors, growing up with her.
“And I think it should continue forever. I mean, it’s just a hoax.
“So wherever the petition is to save the neighbors, I will sign it. I am on board.
“So wherever the petition is to save the neighbors, I will sign it. I’m on board. I’ve got a son on the show – Beth Brennan’s son is on the show. I have been. “
It is rumored that fellow legends Kylie Manog and Jason Donovan may return for a final episode. So will Natalie consider joining him on Ramsay Street?
