Rev. Ferdinand believes that the flops of Manchester United have used the club as a gold mine.

The Red Devils have spent a fortune on transfer fees and wages for the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Angel de Maria, Bastin Schweinsteiger and Anthony Marshall.

But United legend Ferdinand believes his former club need to change their recruitment policy and get men’s leaders if they want to compete for bigger titles again.

Ferdinand said: “In recent years, players have seen Manchester United as a gold mine at football clubs.

“I’ve seen players come and go, and I think it’s okay to just stay cool on the sidelines and not always be selected.”

When asked if this happened in his 12 years at Old Trafford? Ferdinand replied Vibe with five podcasts: “Really, no.”

Ferdinand was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in 2013, the last United team to win the Premier League.

The former England defender has won a total of six Premium titles, including the 2008 Champions League.

And the 43-year-old pundit says United need to scrutinize new players after citing the qualities of Michael Kirk and Henrik Larsen.

Ferdinand added: “They need men’s leaders. When you are buying a player for Manchester United, you have to look at the person and the character. Can this person take the culture?

“I do not want the signature of this aspiring cheater who is a good player but I do not know what else I am getting.

“I want players who you say the guy can be a man at this football club and lead the people and get people in line.

“People who don’t get hurt aren’t stupid. It’s hard to find but you have to work hard and look at people’s characters and find out if they come to this football club and Made with the right things to play with.

“Because the pressure on Man United is very different from the pressure on many other clubs in this country and around the world.

“There are only a few clubs that put so much weight and pressure on your shoulders. Can you handle that?”

“Look at someone like Michael Kirk. He did very well in West Ham and Spurs. Was he ready to make the leap to Manchester United?

“I am convinced that his role was worked out diligently. A great boy, an honest pro, works hard and watches his game and wants to improve.

“It’s not hard to know, you need to know the right people in the game. You can hit the road, but have you got the character to hit?

“Even Henrik came and he didn’t come for the swag. He came to be influential. He was one of the reasons we won the league this year because of the influence we won the league this year.

“You see young players like Wayne Rooney looking at him and thinking, ‘This is Henrik Larson.’ He wasn’t cooling down, he was yelling at people in training and that’s how you play at the top level.

“He was not at his peak at the time. His races, his intensity, the way he applied himself to it every day, were then passed on to the next generation.

“It simply came to our notice then. [Edinson] Kiwani and [Cristiano] To do for Ronaldo. [Jadon] Template and [Marcus] Rashford is sucking it all in and taking it inside.

“These are the questions you have to ask the club – are they taking it all?”
