The SIR would not want to cast Billy Connolly as a victim of Parkinson’s disease.
Now a new show will remind us of the many funny moments that Big Yin has given us and why he is one of the comedians in the world.
In clips of classic stand-up performances and side-splitting interviews, OutPatting shares hilarious comic stories with his showbiz friends, including Sean Connery.
Chatting in the kitchen of the Florida Keys home with his wife, Pamela Stephenson, he says with a smile: “Bad behavior is behavior that is irritating to other people.”
In the first episode of Billy Connolly Days. . . , He remembers the mischief he did over the years – including a strange game he played with his delegation during the tour.
Billy, 79, said: “You are living in luxury in these luxurious hotels with big staff, and sometimes you say ‘Oh f ** k this’, and you do something naughty.
“You arrive at the hotel and you’re all checked in and someone says ‘change!’, And you have to come back to the bar dressed in what you find in your room.”
“There are bed sheets and tablecloths and pillow cases – and in Holiday Inns you use a little bit of paper that goes across the toilet.
“Suddenly the bar is full of Romans – it’s a lot of fun. It’s a bad thing.”
The game was dreamed up by the late Soundman Malcolm Kings North, a former Status Quo sound engineer.
And he recalls another real moment on the tour when his boss player broke into a hotel restaurant, grabbed a giant plant with giant leaves, and said: Are. “
Most read in the Scottish Sun.
Of course, there are plenty of wild nights to remember – including The Who’s Keith Moon and actor John Hurt.
Unusually, the legendary Wild Man drummer was not drinking – and he raised his eyebrows to explain why the wine did not pass his lips.
Billy said: “No one introduced me and me. We were at an ice cream parlor in London and there were booths where about six or eight people were sitting, and he was right behind me.
“So, we were talking, and he said, ‘What are you doing later?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know.’
“Let’s laugh,” he said. So we got out of town.
“It was me and John Hurt and he. We went out for the AP and he won’t drink.”
“I quit drinking. I only have brandy suppositories,” he said.
Recalling a story from his life in LA, Billy recounted how one day he had to rescue James Bond from the side of the road.
He said: “I knew a lot of famous people. I lived in the hills of Hollywood.
“We had a party on Sunday afternoon, and I was making soup.
He said let’s laugh. So we got out of town. It was me and John Hurt and he. We went out for AP and he won’t drink. He said, ‘I have stopped drinking. I’m just taking brandy suppositories. ‘
Cat Connolly on Keith Moon
“Pamela was looking for alcohol and she said, ‘Sean Connery just got a call – he can find a place.’
I said, ‘It’s easy to find. I said it two or three times.
“I went to look for him and he was on the side of the road next to the fire station.” I said, “What happened to you?” Connery replied: “The ridiculous instructions you gave me could not find a place.”
“I said, ‘Didn’t you find any of them looking for directions?’
“I don’t know how they work,” Connery replied.
And I said: ‘Ah, for your sake, you’re James Bond!’
This is one of the many cat stories in the series, which starts next Thursday with Gold.
It promises to “provide an intimate guide to the cat’s relationship with its content, as well as provide insights into its life.”
On the show, the cat wears a series of colorful shirts as he talks to interviewer Mike Riley, sitting on a boat on his porch and out on the river.
It is a long way from Glasgow, where he and his older sister grew up in the Florence Tenement blocks.
Siblings left by their mother, siblings had a difficult childhood and were raised by their aunt.
Billy was working at Clyde Side Shipyards when he started playing music in folk clubs before going into comedy.
‘Ghost is a headless dog’
He finally got a big break in 1975, when he was booked as an anonymous to appear on Michael Parkinson’s chat show.
Still, the star is unable to raise its profile.
Talking about the first property he bought after his success, he said: “I found a big house in Aberdeenshire – 17 bedrooms. It had ghosts in it.
“I never saw him, but an old man from the village told me. He said, ‘Have you seen the ghost yet?’ I said no. He said, “This is a dog – a dog without a head.”
I said, “It’s a shame if it’s a dog without a head. How can it lick its own will?”
Her father did not find Big Yin’s rise to fame so ridiculous.
Billy added: “He didn’t look like he liked it. He was working at Rolls-Royce in Hillington, Glasgow. He was an engineering parts inspector.
And whoever was in charge of the front door of Rolls-Royce would lead the people to my father and say, ‘Would you like to meet Billy Connolly’s father?’ And I think he walked away from me.
He didn’t seem to love her.
Billy Connolly on his father
“The whole idea of me being a comedian was just a pain to him. You really can’t blame him.” Along with the laughter, he shares a touching insight into the Father.
After all, it’s no surprise that Billy wanted to be a different parent to his five children – Jamie and Cara from their first marriage to interior designers Iris Presag and Pamela, 72, with Daisy, Amy and Scarlett.
Recalling when Jamie gave birth to her first child, she said: “These are the days when fathers were not allowed to go to the birth department.
“My wife wanted me to come in. And then when I went in she said, ‘Get out.’
“Then I didn’t see Jamie until he was in my little bed under my bed. It was beautiful.”
“So I told her the same thing I did to all the girls – I said, ‘Welcome, we’ll make you and me laugh.’
He added: “I loved the heat-seeking missile – put the baby on the edge of the bed and go to the other side and just lie down and watch him sleep clinging to you. And he would always have his legs against you. End up
“Your bed should be a welcome place for children. They love it.
‘I miss having children’
“When people say, ‘We have a new baby, we’ve got a room for him,’ you think, ‘Poor little soul – he’s going to jail. He doesn’t even know he’s here.’ Has done something – he is in solitary confinement. Put him to bed! “
“I remember being their baby, changing them, letting them sleep – it’s all fun.
Connery replied: “The ridiculous instructions you gave me, I couldn’t find the place.” I said, ‘Didn’t you find any of those looking in that direction?’ Connery replied: “I don’t know how they work.” And I said: ‘Ah, for your sake, you’re James Bond!’
Cat Connolly on Sean Connery
“It was the joy of my life when my son was born. He gave a reason for the whole thing to happen. You know, this little thing depended on me. He made everything good and valuable.”
In 2013, the cat was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
He announced his retirement from stand-up in 2018 and has not acted since his role in the 2016 comedy film Wild Oats.
She received accolades for her role as John Brown in the 1997 film Mrs. Brown, with Dame Judy Dench for her close relationship with Queen Victoria’s Highland helper.
In 2018 he held an exhibition of his art and in October last year he published his autobiography Windswept & Interesting.
Billy and Palm now live in Florida when winter management in their beloved New York became more dangerous for the cat due to Parkinson’s.
He’s philosophical about the move – but blunt as always, he says: “I lived in New York, and I loved it in Manhattan.
“But in the winter it becomes an ice rink. I just can’t keep up. I had to get out.”
Billy married Palm, 72, in 1989, eight years after they met and four years after their divorce.
It could be a complicated situation – but the Scottish legend thinks differently.
He added: “Love is easy – it’s everything that’s hard. Love is the easiest thing on earth – it just falls on you and eats you, and you can just give it back.
“This is the greatest gift you can give to anyone, giving back the love that is given to you.”
