And Barca Wideman Sanchez was one of the targets of the long shot that Liverpool tried to sign to replace Suarez.

At the time, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insisted at one point that the club “thinks” he has it.

Rogers said: “We felt we needed to have a world-class operator, just like any other.

“It was always difficult to replace Louis. Alexis was that player. We thought we had him.”

Club legend and captain Gerard was also part of Liverpool’s transfer strategy, and he will personally approach the targets.

Gerrard revealed in his 2016 biography: “The club will tell me what longshot goal they have in mind and then ask me to contact them.

“He thought the request to consider moving to Liverpool would have more of an effect on me.”

He continued: “I worked hard with Sanchez.

“I was hoping that I would be able to ride the wave of my glorious 2013-14 season.

“The way he answered was very good; his English was good and we did some detailed text exchanges.”

But Liverpool quickly realized how deep Arsenal’s legendary boss Arsene Wenger was at Sanchez.

The Frenchman also went to Brazil “to try and persuade” Sanchez to join Arsenal, and to persuade him.

Arsenal was seen as a more attractive option and after the 2014 World Cup, Sanchez signed for a club in north London for a fee of around 32 million.

And Sanchez later proved that Liverpool really failed to sign him.

The Chilean icon won two FA Cups with the Gunners and was considered one of the best in the Premier League before moving to Manchester United.

Sanchez’s star power left Gerard wondering what trophies Wenger would receive at Anfield if he joined Liverpool instead.

Gerard said: “He will be one of the signatories of the season.

“And, a year later, I was still wondering how Liverpool’s 2014-15 campaign would have turned out if Sanchez had chosen us.”
