Inter Milan have been criticized by Dan Ashton for allowing them to continue playing against Liverpool after a head injury.

The 30-year-old defender needed treatment at the half-hour mark as Serie A lost 2-0 to the Reds in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League clash.

De Vries was treated with an ice bag on his head but was soon taken back to the pitch by manager Simon Anzaghi.

The player, who did several checks with Inter’s medical team and appeared to be complaining about his vision, also wanted to continue.

But the star hit the deck again before the break but was allowed to continue after the restart.

The Dutchman was eventually replaced in the second round, but former West Ham striker Ashton rejected the decision to allow him to play.

On commentary for ChatHe said: “I saw Rugby Union on the weekends, there are people in the stands, they watch a video – if there’s a fight, you’re out.

“Any ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’ or ‘Do you want to continue?’ De Vries is still adamant he wants to continue.

“He would love to play in such a big game. As a team, you don’t want to be without your best players.

“But, come on, where’s the thought process in protecting the players?”

The former West Ham and Norwich star added: “You can see De Vries waving his hand in front of his face as if his eyes were blurred or a little dizzy. Sure enough it tells you that Things aren’t quite right?

“We have this problem in football, whether the player is determined to move forward instead of taking it in his hand. I don’t like to see it.

“A big cultural change is needed. We need to look at the well-being of the players, rather than how important the other half is.

Many viewers also questioned the decision on Twitter.

One wrote: “I wonder what kind of inter-rules the Inter has. This man should be off the field.”

Another said: “The tumultuous protocol in football is an insult.”

As another tweeted: “De Vrij has treated blurring twice which he has indicated twice. Where is the connection protocol?”
