Citizen Advice Research shows that approximately 15 million people waited for the post during Christmas, including 2.5 million who missed important documents, health appointments, or were unable to pay fines or bills. ۔

More than half of those waiting (54%) said they had to go without letters for at least a week, while 3% said they could not pay the bill, 8% said they had a significant Lack of documentation, and 7% said they missed a health appointment, increasing to 16% of those on the NHS waiting list.

Millions waited for the mail to arrive during the festival.

People in London (35%), the Southeast (32%) and the North West (31%) were the most likely to delay receiving a post, according to a survey of 4,165 adults in the UK.

Further analysis by the charity shows that the situation failed to improve significantly in January, with 23% interrupting their mail reporting.

On 12 and 13 January, the Royal Mail warned that 77 areas across the UK were affected by the blockade, affecting 2.4 million people daily in England and Wales.

Dame Claire Moriarty, chief executive of Citizen Advice, said: “One of us missed an astonishing 2.5 million important documents, missed health appointments, or was unable to pay a fine or bill due to a delay after Christmas.

“We understand how the epidemic has put pressure on Royal Mail. But after a two-year hiatus, Royal Mail cannot allow poor service to become the norm.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “The rise of Omicron had a significant impact during Christmas and January, when approximately 15,000 crew members lost their jobs at one point due to illness and isolation.

“We apologize for any delays our customers have experienced in the affected local areas. We are working hard to improve performance and improve service in these areas, including overtime at 340.” Spending more than a million, extra temporary staff and sick pay, as well as targeted assistance.
