Vladimir Putin has sent 7,000 more troops to the Ukrainian border as Liz Truss warns that the crisis could escalate for months.

The Russian leader insisted this week that he does not want to go to war after the crisis talks because tensions have reached a boiling point – but White House officials have called his claims “false.”

A further 7,000 Russian troops have arrived on the Ukrainian border in recent days, according to leading figures from the Biden administration – with an estimated 150,000 already expected – despite Putin’s claim that he is withdrawing troops. ۔

Ms Truss said Moscow’s claims that it was beginning to withdraw its forces from its southern neighbor’s borders should not be “misunderstood by security”.

His warning came after the head of Britain’s military intelligence said that, contrary to the Kremlin’s claims, Russia was in fact continuing to deploy troops along the border.

Chief of Defense Intelligence Lieutenant General Sir Jim Hockenhall said additional armored vehicles, helicopters and a field hospital had been spotted in the area.

In a statement issued late Wednesday, he said: “Contrary to their claims, Russia is increasing its military capabilities closer to Ukraine.

“It includes a view of additional armored vehicles, helicopters and a field hospital approaching the Ukrainian border. Russia has troops to invade Ukraine.”

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Ms Truss, who will visit Ukraine and Poland in a recent show of support for the Allies, said there was no evidence that Moscow was ready to back down.

“We should not be misled by Russia’s claim that some troops are returning to their barracks, when in fact there is no sign of a reduction in the readiness of the Russian military,” he said. ۔

Britain, meanwhile, has doubled its forces near Russia’s border in response to President Putin’s aggression.

As the threat of an invasion of Ukraine continued, additional troops, tanks and armored vehicles were already on their way to increase NATO’s presence.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace announced that the HMS Diamond, a ین 1 billion Navy Destroyer, and the Apache helicopter gunship would make their way to Eastern Europe in a matter of days.

And four additional Typhoon RAF jets entered Cyprus ready to compete with Russian jets in disputed airspace over the Black Sea.

The military presence in Estonia will increase from 850 to 1700.

Troops from the Royal Welsh Combat Group will reinforce existing people with Challenger 2 tanks.

A Creek team of 350 Royal Marines has also begun arriving in Poland to bolster its contingent of 150 engineers.

And if Russia invades Ukraine, a thousand troops are ready to respond to the refugee crisis.

But Mr Wallace insisted: “The only way out is through tension and diplomacy.”
