Passion can be difficult.
While you can find true love at work, this can be a challenge for employers.
According to YouGov research, about one-fifth of relationships begin in the office.
But Gill McAteer, an HR expert from business consulting firm Citation, says: “When it comes to romance in the workplace, many employers don’t know where they stand.”
Here are the top tips to help you get started:
- Banning office romance can be a step too far, but employers can implement specific policies.
- Any policy should cover whether privacy is required for romance and, if so, for whom. There should also be a time frame for disclosure.
- Firms should consider the implications if, for example, the relationship involves senior and more junior partners.
- Set expected standards of conduct, balance business needs and employees’ privacy.
- Any policy should remind colleagues that having an unwanted relationship or inappropriate behavior with a partner can be considered sexual harassment.
