An SCOTS tenant has described how the “nightmare” of flats left him in a terrible state of skin and unable to grow his own hair.
Alexander Roy, 37, has been suffering from damp and black mold for the past four years.
Alexander rented Link Housing in Edinburgh and is currently living in a company flat on St. Columba Drive in Kirknteloch.
He moved into his one-bedroom flat in Kirknteloch in October 2018 and the mold began to appear in late November.
The fungus started in her bedroom cabinets before it spread to other rooms, including her bedroom, bathroom and kitchen.
Alexander contacted Link Housing, but he said it took him six months to send someone out for inspection.
Despite repeated requests from the company to resolve the issue, Alexander said he was still suffering from widespread moisture and mold.
The problems have gotten so bad that it has caused her skin to become inflamed and she has been “attacked” by the mold mite, which has kept her hair short.
The template also affected his mental health and caused him to throw out damaged items including a bed frame, mattress, TV, computer and clothes.
Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Alexander said: “I moved to my current location in October 2018. I have been asking for the last three years to separate the mold from the link.
“They asked me to send them an e-mail and six months later they sent the inspectors out and there was a follow-up call but they did nothing. It’s a nightmare – I can’t sleep or eat. And it has a serious effect on my body. Mental health.
“They’re raising my rent year after year and they don’t seem to care.
‘I’m being attacked by mold mites’
“Two bedroom cabinets are full of wetness. I’ve had to change a lot of things.
“I had to throw out clothes, a bed frame, a mattress, a TV, a CD player and a computer. When I came here I had a lot of stuff but now I have nothing.
“My windows are leaking. My skin condition has deteriorated and my skin has reacted to the mold.
“I am trying to keep clean but there are some days where I am getting wounds. I am being attacked by mold mites and I have to keep shaving my hair.
“I have recently sent pictures of the link. Slates are coming from the roof and rendering is falling on the wall.
My council house is covered in black mold – my stuff is ruined and I always cry but they are ‘too busy’ to help.
“I’m disgusted with how I’m being treated. They’ve used every excuse to do nothing. I just want the mold and moisture to go away.”
Alexander previously lived for four-and-a-half months in a link property in Westerhales, Edinburgh, which he said was also wet and moldy.
He asked if there was a condemnation of the bathroom, in which dirty water enters the space, and he had to empty himself using buckets and bin bags.
He said: “I lived with Link in Edinburgh and my bathroom was condemned. There was a waste pipe standing in the water.
“I had to urinate in a bucket and defecate in a bin bag. It was unpleasant and the place was crumbling.”
Link Housing has been contacted for comment.
