I stopped my heavy boots over time with the music, as the sun shone orange on the white slopes.

La Folie Douce Bar, a busy ski resort in Les Arcs, is a place for party animals. The Revelers regularly enjoy live shows, a huge Scandinavian bar serving beer, jigsaw puzzles and pit stop grubs.

From here, the Venezuela Express, a huge double-decker cable car, connects the resort to the famous La Pelican, just west of Les Arcs, surrounded by beautiful countryside and ski towns.

My base was 10 km away in the village of Plan Pace, a vast area of the French Alps.

As a fairly inexperienced skier, I didn’t know much about the resort, which is close to the Italian border, but my friends did a great job with it.
And it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The wind-protected, charming village at the foot of the mountains is perfect for taking advantage of the 425km of pests that make up the Paradisky ski area.

Traditional Alpine restaurants and shops overlook Frosted Pines and even had a drive postcard view from Leon Airport.

The mountains are sloping on the winding roads, their beautiful white peaks are so charming that by the time I arrived, I was itching to put on my skis.

For beginners like me, there are many ski rental shops, most of which are within walking distance, which will get you out. Our pad, the Chalet Fleur de Neige, was only 50m from the piste, meaning minimal crawling around ski gear – a real luxury item.

Upon entering the wooden house, we were greeted by Tony and Carroll, the hosts of our warm and smiling chelate, who made us homemade cakes and afternoon tea.

The chalet has seven spacious bedrooms that are basic but traditional and also has a sauna on the ground floor which is a great place to open and reduce the aches and pains after skiing.

In the cozy lounge you can marvel at the scenery and warm your feet with a roaring log burner or get caught up in a board game.

Untouched snow

From the village, it takes only a few minutes to reach the slopes by cable car and despite going to the French half term, the resorts did not feel crowded, so I had enough space to fall as much as I wanted (which I did a lot).

After skiing only once before, a big part of my journey was ski school. But with only two people in my class, this group felt more like a private lesson than learning.

My classmates were 12-year-old girls, which meant a walk in the amusement park with winding streets and jumps – which I loved.

Resorts run races for all sorts of abilities and ages, but it wasn’t long before I was on an “off-paste” journey, traversing tall trees and untouched snow.

After a tiring morning on the slopes, I couldn’t wait to come back to try the freshly baked cakes prepared by our tireless chelate hosts. Lemon drizzle, carrot cake and Victoria sponge. Cake heaven. But these things were not a patch of dinner.

A local dish of endless wine, beef stew, pork strognafs and tarty flats, potatoes, gooey cheese, onions and bacon feels like Christmas every night.

There are also many classic French restaurants in the village or you can go back to La Foli dos Bar for burgers and wine.

Sitting on an icy slope, watching the sun set behind the mountains is a scene I will never forget.

Endless wine, beef stew, pork stroganafs and a local dish of tortillas, potatoes, gooey cheese, onions and bacon make every night feel like Christmas.
