Jockey Mark Walsh dedicates victory to late Uncle

The last Grade 1 before the Cheltenham Festival went on its way to Ireland as the poor Deodres came in front of Trump in Scott Chase.

Joseph O’Brien’s Reader achieved his third high-profile victory with Two for Gold after the last fence.

Jockey Mark Walsh appeared to be in command until he made his second, final strike, but he was safe enough to face Kim Bailey’s runner-up.

O’Brien could only see from his base in Kilkenny County, but thankfully his horse traveled Thursday morning to escape Hurricane Eunice’s worst.

Ireland’s first winner of the Scott Chase is an insulting symbol after defeating the British 23-5 at last year’s festival. Only Younes’ older brother can stop it from happening again in three weeks.

Whether or not O’Brien’s Star travels to Prestbury Park remains to be seen.

Ryanair is a clear race for the seven-year-old and the Buckeyes reduced it to 12-1 to 7-1 for the pot. But Almighty Allah has completely filled it with 12 lengths this past season and has chased it twice before this year.

Another creek in Mailing Chase, which he won last spring, could be a better place.

O’Brien said: “Cheltenham and Aintree are two very logical places. We’ll see how he gets out of today’s race and a decision on Cheltenham will be made in due course.

“Allah is good for two and a half miles and we have come against it many times but when you have a grade 1 horse you meet the best.”

Kenny Walsh kept the poor Dodgers wide to stay on the best field and his move paid off at the end of the day. Only four of the eight runners made it home, beating fourth-ranked Mr Fisher by 73 lengths.

The jockey said: “After I widened it, it started to jump well and I was sure we had it until we made two mistakes.

“People will say it’s another soft grade 1, but he’s won three of them now and he’s a decent horse.

“We are used to chasing Allah, but what can you do? I will not tell anyone else to go to Him!”

“I lost my uncle, Michael, in a week and I would like to dedicate it to him. He was always with me.”

Welsh Wizard Sam Thomas and current jockey Charlie Deutsch doubly thanked the inspiring young Skystick and Good Risk at All.

The pair, both owned by Die Walters, are likely to be bound for an entry with Skytastic despite a 10-1 cut for Bali Moore.

It was a memorable Saturday at Gary Moore’s Stables as Goshen and Porticello toured for Winkinton and Haddock winners.

Goshen backed up his recent Sandown victory with a fight to defend his crown in the Kingwell Hurdle after seeing Adagio.

Young Gun Porticello was the best in Victor Ludorum in terrible conditions. He was cut to 12-1 for victory but the connection indicated he would need a softening to get there.
